Here I am putting my bold, high-contrast pieces consisting mainly of single characters or phrases. In traditional East Asian philosophy, ki (or qi in Chinese) is the invisible energy that flows through all living things. In Japanese calligraphy, ki is the invisible bridge between the artist's internal state and the external physical stroke. Ultimately, mastering Japanese calligraphy is not just about mastering the brush; it is about cultivating, controlling, and expressing the power of ki.
A monk asked a Master, "What is the Way?"
"It is right before your eyes," said the master.
"Why do I not see it for myself?" asked the monk.
"Because you are thinking of yourself," the master replied. "
What about you: do you see it?"
"So long as you see double, saying I don't and you do, and so on, your eyes are clouded," said the master. "When there is neither 'I' nor 'You,' can one see it?"
