The art of Japanese calligraphy (Shodo) is deeply rooted in the historical evolution of Chinese characters (kanji).Understanding the progression of the five core scripts provided me with a foundation of this art form. Historically, these scripts evolved in response to the changing needs of society—shifting from ancient religious engravings to bureaucratic efficiency, and ultimately blossoming into art.

In Asian philosophy, good things should come in pairs. One "Joy" is a personal state; two "Joys" represent a shared life, a partnership, or a stroke of luck so big it cannot be contained in a single character. This painting takes the character 喜 (Joy), doubles it into 囍, and uses the "Way of the Brush" to turn a linguistic symbol into a visual prayer for partnership and multiplied fortune.
