Here I am putting my bold, high-contrast pieces consisting mainly of single characters or phrases. In traditional East Asian philosophy, ki (or qi in Chinese) is the invisible energy that flows through all living things. In Japanese calligraphy, ki is the invisible bridge between the artist's internal state and the external physical stroke. Ultimately, mastering Japanese calligraphy is not just about mastering the brush; it is about cultivating, controlling, and expressing the power of ki.
“How can the mountain be for me alone? Still it is I think, for me alone.” – Tanka by Shingawa Tetsuzan
The tanka is a thirty-one-syllable poem, traditionally written in a single unbroken line. A form of waka, Japanese song or verse, tanka translates as "short song," and intended to evoke vivid imagery and reflection for the reader. They are free verse, so they do not have to rhyme, but must follow specific syllable patterns.
